The ‘One Touch’ Rule

Implementing the “One touch” rule in your household

Is this a practice you have heard of? If you’re unfamiliar with this method, this is a practice that can have a huge effect on your physical and mental spaces.

The thought behind it is simple – touching a task once, enables you to complete it fully before moving on to the next. Unfinished tasks can become overwhelming, leading to a cluttered mind as well as a cluttered space. As these tasks pile up, they create negative energy and a sense of unfinished business.

This concept in practice means you would take the time to hang up your jacket on the first try, or put the dishes in the dishwasher rather than making a pit stop in the sink. This simple approach over time removes the disorder from your head and your home.

Read our tips for implementing the ‘one touch rule’ effectively

Focus on one task at a time // When you begin a task, commit to completing it fully before moving on to the next. Avoid multitasking, as it can decrease your efficiency and increase the chances of leaving tasks unfinished.

Use the two-minute rule // If a task can be completed in two minutes or less, do it immediately. This prevents small tasks from accumulating and eventually taking longer to complete.

Be flexible // While the one-touch rule is a great guideline, it's essential to be flexible. Some tasks may require more time or attention, and unexpected interruptions can occur. Adapt as needed, but always aim to minimize the accumulation of unfinished tasks.

Prioritize tasks // Before starting your day, make a to-do list and prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency. This will help you identify which tasks should be addressed first.

Declutter regularly // Apply the one-touch rule to physical items as well. When you pick up an item, decide whether you need it or can let it go. Avoid putting items down to deal with later (just put them away)!

Practice self-discipline // Developing self-discipline is crucial for consistently following the one-touch rule. Remind yourself of the benefits of completing tasks in a timely manner to maintain a clutter-free environment.
