Fall Denim Guide
I think we can all agree that shopping for jeans is a total pain (or totally painful). I wish it were easy, but with so many brands, styles and fits, there really isn’t ‘one perfect jean’ for everyone.
The way your jeans fit and how you feel in them is crucial to how much you’ll actually wear them. So I created a step-by-step guide for buying the perfect pair of jeans this Fall in hopes you don’t waste your money or fill your closet with jeans you’ll never actually wear.
1. KNOW YOUR MEASUREMENTS
Knowing your average size and what flatters your body type is key to finding the perfect pair of jeans, especially if you are buying online. Most brands and retailers will list fit details so you can accurately determine your correct size and don’t forget to read the fine print.
2. ALLOW YOURSELF TIME
Picking the right pair of jeans definitely takes patience and finding the perfect fit takes time, a bunch of orders and returns and lots of try on sessions. Make sure to give yourself the time to properly try on and move around in several pairs of jeans and give yourself some grace.
3. PAY ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS
Understanding denim features like wash, stretch vs. rigid, fabric weight and pocket placement and knowing what you like will help narrow down your options when shopping for a new pair of jeans.
4. STRETCH ISN’T ALWAYS A GOOD THING
Jeans with more stretch will always be more forgiving with sizing and sometimes, comfort. However, too much stretch can also make it look like you are wearing leggings instead of denim. Denim with less stretch is referred to as rigid and often looks better on, but does take more time to wear in. My recommendation is to go with a mix of cotton (at least 95% or greater) with a bit of stretch (no more than 5% spandex, elastane, polyester) for cool-looking denim that’s comfortable. If you want leggings, stick with your Alos.
5. REMEMBER, LESS IS MORE
Instead of buying multiple pairs of cheap fast fashion jeans, buy one $200+ pair that you’ll wear over and over again and will last more than one season.
6. TRY ON AT HOME
Whether you buy your jeans in store or online, be sure to wear them for a few minutes at home before taking the tags off. Walk around and sit down to make sure they feel comfortable and are the right size. If you don’t want to take them off, you know they are keepers!
Happy Shopping,
