Move In Guide 101
Since Lifestyled began offering move-in services, we’ve learned a lot about what makes for a seamless move. Today, we’ll be sharing some of our tips to save you time, and ease your stress as you transition into your new home.
Editing
Why waste time packing and moving items you won’t use in your new house?! Moving homes is literally the best and most beneficial time to edit your belongings so that you’re only moving items you LOVE and USE! Your new home is a blank space that you can make whatever you want. So before packing picture what you want it to look and feel like and remember that image when editing your current home. Edit each room either before or while packing. Put all items you’re keeping into packing boxes, all items you’re donating into bags to drop off, and dispose of all trash immediately to keep your spaces as organized as possible.
Styling
While your personal taste may not have changed much, sometimes homes lend themselves better to different design styles. Before you pack, do a quick edit of your decor items. Pull out any item you no longer love, items that were never really your style, and anything you know you’re not going to use at your new house and create a donation/give pile. Any item your unsure about (what we like to call maybe’s) like items that may not match your new space, but you want to see to be sure, those stay through the move.
When you get to your new space, keep all decor items in one area and focus on unpacking your more functional items first. This decor area can now be a little shop in your home, where you can choose items to fill in spaces like open shelving and end tables. Keep an empty box or two handy and once you find what suits your space put what doesn’t in these boxes and you have another donation drop ready to go.
Organization
When you move into a new space, especially if you’ve been in the previous one a while, the actual process of figuring out where things go can be confusing. One tip we recommend is to walk through your new home and act out your daily routines. For example, if you typically make a smoothie in the morning, think about where you’d keep your blender and supplements and walk through the act of making a smoothie. Is it an awkward walk? A natural flow? If you cook a lot, walk through the similar process of where you’d keep spices, pots, utensils, etc. Do this for each room, to help you create and designate smart spaces for the things you use most! That will make the unpacking process much smoother and faster.
Flexibility
The most important thing to remember when you are moving into your new house is to be flexible. No matter how much thought goes into all the details, you may still find that things don’t quite fit just right, where you pictured them going. Maybe all your pots and pans don’t fit into their designated drawer, or that your linen closet isn’t quite right. Think about unpacking as the first draft, not the final product. If something isn’t working, move it! It’s okay to change your mind and re-work what you had originally planned.
Remember these tips the next time your planning or making a move into a new house. And if you’re feeling under water, or can’t figure out where you’ll find the time to complete these tasks, you can always ask for help!
