Spring Capsule Wardrobe
While every season has its style perks, there’s something about Spring — and Spring styles, to be exact—that really makes me want to update my wardrobe and start shopping! Now that the temperature is finally warming up, it’s time to edit your closet with our new Ultimate Closet Organization Course, to fine-tune our wardrobes and plan all our looks to take us through the season and into Summer.
But before you start adding things to your cart, I want to talk about a concept that’s completely changed the way I shop…the capsule wardrobe. The idea is to edit down the number of items you wear every day to, say, thirty pieces. Everything, in theory, should mesh with one another, and if done right, will give you ample (and stylish) outfits while actually buying way less.
I love this five-step approach below because it’s super easy to follow, keeps your shopping focused, and prevents you from over shopping. Plus, I can almost guarantee you there will be less second-guessing your purchases and fewer impulse buys. Just remember: ‘quality over quantity’!
ONE - STICK TO A COLOR STORY
Make note of the pieces you already own and love - your favorite sweatshirt, a flowy dress or classic denim. That’s the baseline you’ll want to start building a color palette around. For you, that might mean introducing more pastels and prints to the mix. For me, I always update with neutrals, like white, tans, and denim. Once you determine your color wheel, try not to stray too far from it.
TWO - KNOW YOUR GO-TO STYLES
What kinds of styles do you reach for on the regular? Maybe it’s relaxed, wide-leg pants. Or your still on the joggers and sweatshirt train. I’m 100% jeans and white shirt gal (always) Whatever it is, these are your classics. These shapes work for your body, and they make you feel the most comfortable and confident, so keep your focus there.
THREE - LIMIT TRENDY PIECES
My favorite way to breathe new life into basics is by adding in a few trend-forward items (few being the key word here). Think about adding a trend forward top, or bringing in that seasonal color via a shoe or a handbag. Fresh? Yes. Trend forward but not too trendy. Yes!
FOUR - OPT FOR ACCESSORIES THAT FIT YOUR LIFESTYLE
The more practical, the better. Bags that fit everything you need, shoes that work for all parts of your life and earrings that can be dressed up or down. I’ve narrowed it down to the perfect trifecta—one tote for erranding (must fit my laptop), one crossbody/tote to days and nights out and one pair of (overpriced, already dirty) sneakers.
FIVE - CLEAN OUT OFTEN
Finally (and my favorite) keep your closet decluttered and organized! This rule is so, so important for a capsule wardrobe and makes getting dressed so much easier. And remember the the ‘one in, one out’ rule. If you buy something new, donate something you no longer love or wear. Also, it may sound obvious, but make sure everything is on a uniform hangers facing the same direction to make it easier on your eyes.
